Understanding Your Options

The specifics of your laser skin resurfacing treatment will depend on your goals, your signs of aging, and the quality of your skin. At Wingate Plastic Surgery, we offer carbon dioxide (CO2), erbium, and fractionated lasers.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing

This has long been considered the gold standard for laser skin resurfacing. It uses pulsed light energy to remove thin layers of skin without damaging the surrounding structures. It can treat severe wrinkles, scars, birthmarks, and other skin conditions. You will need about two weeks to recover after CO2 laser resurfacing.

Erbium Laser Resurfacing

This slightly less intensive approach can remove superficial and moderate lines and wrinkles. It has fewer side effects when compared to CO2 lasers, requires only a local anesthetic, and has a recovery time of one week.

Fractional Laser Resurfacing

This approach works by delivering narrow columns of laser light to the treatment area. As such, most of your skin remains uninjured. Between those columns, the collagen will contract and your skin will tighten. The recovery time for fractional laser resurfacing is one week.

Your Treatment Experience: What to Expect

We will perform your laser skin resurfacing procedure in the comfort of our Wingate Plastic Surgery office. Depending on your treatment, you may require local anesthesia only or local anesthesia combined with sedation.

Once the anesthetic has taken effect, Dr. Wingate will use the laser to direct intense beams of light energy at your skin. This will destroy the outer layers and heat the tissue beneath the surface. The entire resurfacing procedure will take between 30 minutes to two hours.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have laser skin resurfacing if I have darker skin?

Certain laser technologies can be safely used on a range of skin tones when the correct settings and approach are chosen. During your consultation, your skin type and concerns are carefully evaluated before recommending treatment.

How many laser resurfacing treatments are usually needed?

Some patients achieve meaningful improvement after a single treatment, while others benefit from a series of sessions. The number of treatments depends on the condition being addressed and the depth of resurfacing required.

When can I wear makeup again after laser resurfacing?

Makeup is typically avoided until the skin has healed and new skin has formed over the treated area. Your provider will let you know when it is safe to resume normal skincare and cosmetics.

How long does redness last after laser resurfacing?

Redness is a common part of the healing process and can vary depending on the depth of treatment. For lighter treatments it may fade within days, while deeper resurfacing may take longer to settle.

Can laser skin resurfacing be used on areas other than the face?

Yes. In addition to the face, laser resurfacing may be used on areas such as the neck, chest, or hands where signs of aging or sun damage often appear.

Is laser skin resurfacing painful?

Topical or local anesthesia is used to keep patients comfortable during treatment. Afterward, the skin may feel similar to a sunburn while it heals.

How should I protect my skin after treatment?

Sun protection becomes especially important while the skin heals. Consistent use of sunscreen and protective skincare helps maintain results and protect the new skin.

How long do laser skin resurfacing results last?

Results can last for years depending on the depth of treatment and how well the skin is protected from sun exposure and other environmental factors.
