Lighter Breasts That Fit Your Frame

Breasts that are too large for your frame can cause discomfort and aesthetic issues. In these cases, a breast reduction with Dr. Wingate can shape lighter, proportionate, and balanced breasts that look and feel beautiful.

Breast Reduction Before & After

Breast Reduction Surgery What to Expect

Breast reduction surgery reduces the size of your breasts while simultaneously improving their shape and placement. During the procedure, Dr. Wingate will:

  • Remove excess breast tissue and skin
  • Reduce the overall size of the breast
  • Adjust the size and position of the areola
  • Sculpt an overall natural and perky chest

The Surgery

Dr. Wingate will perform your breast reduction under general anesthesia. The entire procedure will take approximately two to three hours to complete. Depending on the size of your breasts and your desired results, Dr. Wingate may use one of the following three techniques:

Vertical Reduction

With this technique, Dr. Wingate will make an incision around the areola and down your breast. It’s ideal for women who require moderate breast size reduction and want to address noticeable sagging.

Inverted Reduction

The incisions with this approach mimic those of the vertical reduction but with an additional opening along the bottom crease of your breasts. Dr. Wingate usually reserves this approach for women who need significant breast size reductions.

Liposuction

If you only require a slight reduction in breast size, Dr. Wingate may be able to accomplish your goals with liposuction. It’s less invasive and can remove a small amount of fat from the breasts. However, it’s not ideal for women who have very large breasts or significant sagging and asymmetry.

The Recovery

After your breast reduction surgery, we will fit you with a surgical bra to wear during your recovery to support your new breast contours and ensure your comfort. You can expect to take at least one week off from work.

The Results

You’ll notice that your breasts are lighter and more balanced within the first two to three months, but it can take one year for your full results to become apparent.

How does Dr. Wingate determine how much breast tissue and skin to remove during a breast reduction?

Dr. Wingate tailors the amount of glandular tissue, fat, and skin removed based on your current bra size, body frame, and desired post-surgery proportion. He also considers functional goals, such as relieving neck, back, and shoulder pain. During your initial consultation preparation, he will examine your chest wall anatomy to design a reduction plan that achieves a balanced, perky silhouette.

Can a breast reduction also resize and lift my nipples and areolas?

Yes, reshaping and repositioning the nipple-areolar complex is an integral part of breast reduction surgery. Excess surrounding skin is removed, allowing the nipple to be safely moved higher on the chest mound into a more youthful, natural position. If you require significant skin elevation or volume reshaping without substantial tissue removal, Dr. Wingate may discuss a dedicated breast lift or additional nipple procedures.

Can liposuction be used as a standalone approach for breast reduction?

Liposuction alone can be an effective option for patients seeking a minor reduction in size who have good skin elasticity and predominantly fatty breast tissue. However, for patients requiring significant volume reduction or lifting of sagging skin, surgical excision using a vertical or inverted-T incision is necessary. Liposuction can also be combined with traditional reduction or body contouring to refine the lateral breast roll and underarm areas.

What is the recovery process like after breast reduction surgery?

Most patients take one to two weeks off work to allow initial swelling and bruising to subside. Supportive surgical garments must be worn to stabilize the tissues while healing. Following Dr. Wingate's detailed post-operative instructions helps minimize discomfort, protect scar lines, and support a smooth recovery before resuming exercise or strenuous physical activity.

Is breast reduction surgery commonly included as part of a full-body rejuvenation plan?

Yes, many women choose to combine breast reduction with other contouring procedures to address changes from pregnancy, nursing, or weight loss. For instance, pairing a breast reduction with abdominal contouring during a mommy makeover or addressing excess skin following significant weight loss allows for a comprehensive silhouette transformation under a single recovery period.
